Post-Operative Care

Post-Surgical Instructions

General aftercare guidance to support a smooth recovery following periodontal surgery or implant placement.

Please note: these are general guidelines only. Always follow the specific post-operative instructions given to you by your doctor at LA Periodontics & Implant Specialists, as your care may vary based on your procedure. If your doctor's instructions differ from anything below, follow your doctor's instructions. If you have any concerns about your recovery, call our office at (310) 473-3800.

Bleeding

  • Some oozing or light bleeding is normal for the first 24 hours after surgery.
  • Apply gentle, steady pressure with a clean gauze pad or moistened tea bag directly over the area for 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Avoid spitting, rinsing forcefully, or using a straw, as this can dislodge the clot and restart bleeding.
  • Call our office if bleeding is heavy or does not slow down after applying pressure.

Swelling & Discomfort

  • Some swelling and mild discomfort is expected and typically peaks around 48 hours after surgery.
  • Apply an ice pack to the outside of your face in 20-minute intervals during the first 24 hours to help minimize swelling.
  • Take pain medication as prescribed or recommended by your doctor, and do not exceed the recommended dosage.
  • Keeping your head elevated, even while sleeping, can help reduce swelling.

Diet

  • Stick to a soft, cool diet for the first few days: yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and soups are good options.
  • Avoid hot foods and beverages until numbness has fully worn off.
  • Avoid crunchy, spicy, acidic, or hard foods, as well as seeds and nuts, until your doctor advises otherwise.
  • Stay well hydrated, and avoid alcohol and carbonated beverages during initial healing.

Activity

  • Rest and avoid strenuous physical activity or exercise for at least 48 to 72 hours after surgery.
  • Avoid bending over or heavy lifting, as this can increase blood flow to the surgical site and worsen swelling or bleeding.
  • Do not smoke or use tobacco products, as this significantly slows healing and increases the risk of complications.
  • Gradually resume normal activity as directed by your doctor.

Medication

  • Take all prescribed medications, including antibiotics, exactly as directed and complete the full course even if you feel better.
  • If you were prescribed a mouth rinse, use it only as instructed, typically starting the day after surgery.
  • Do not take aspirin or other blood-thinning medications unless approved by your doctor, as these can increase bleeding.
  • Contact our office if you experience an allergic reaction or unexpected side effects.

Oral Hygiene

  • Do not brush or floss directly at the surgical site until your doctor advises it is safe to do so.
  • You may gently brush your other teeth, avoiding the treated area.
  • If instructed, begin gentle saltwater rinses (about a half teaspoon of salt in warm water) the day after surgery.
  • Avoid mouthwash containing alcohol until your site has healed, unless your doctor advises otherwise.
